Beschreibung:

BIBLE, in English -- The Holy Bible . London: Robert Barker 1613-[1611]. 2° (426 x 275mm). 730 (of 732) leaves, unnumbered, 59 lines, double column in black letter with roman for chapter summaries and roman and italic for marginalia, Calendar in red and black. General title with woodcut border [McKerrow & Ferguson 231] repeated as title border to the New Testament, woodcut headbands, woodcut historiated and decorated initials. Speed's Genealogies [London: J. Beale, 1613?] inserted before Genesis. (General title badly frayed and torn with loss of 50 x 30mm. section, following few leaves also frayed and soiled, D1 of the Calendar almost detached, lacking the map accompanying the Genealogies , R3 of New Testament torn with slight loss, R3-4 repaired at inner margin, a few quires of the New Testament with worming in gutter, Z1 torn and damaged in lower part of page with some loss of text, Z6 torn with partial loss to 32 lines, the final two leaves, 2A5-6, lacking, fraying to the later quires of the New Testament, some marginal soiling and staining.) Uncut in contemporary English calf over oak boards, covers with inner and outer blind-panels formed by a roll of heads in medallions and a second heraldic roll, metal bosses at center and corners (worn, covers with cracks, scuff marks and tears affecting the decoration, spine largely lacking, clasps lacking). Provenance : John Unwin of Earls Colne Essex (signature on front board, dated 1749, another at head of A2 and on A3); John and Sarah Unwin; Robert Marshall (signatures on 3L6v, dated 1747 and 1790 respectively). SECOND FOLIO EDITION OF KING JAMES'S BIBLE, also known as the 'Great She Bible' for the more correct reading 'she went into the citie' in Ruth iii 15. A remarkable error nevertheless occurs in Matt. xxvi 36, where 'Judas' appears for 'Jesus.' A large number of leaves, about one third of the total, are known to exist in two states. The heraldic roll used on the contemporary binding of this copy is comparable to those illustrated in Oldham English Blind-Stamped bindings plate xxxv, nos. 511-512. No new English translation was produced until the Revised Version of 1881 and the Authorised Version, the work of over 40 translators divided into five committees based at Oxford, Cambridge and London, undoubtedly had a greater influence on written and spoken English than any other book. Herbert 319; STC 2224. Cf. PMM 114.
