A large group of 88 small Kalighat paintings on card, mostly depicting figures and scenes from Hindu mythology
Bengal, late 19th/early 20th Centurywatercolour with some silver highlights on card, most with Bengali identifying inscriptions in black ink, inserted loosely in British clothbound postcard album (1920s-40s)
paintings approx. 136 x 85 mm.; album 195 x 135 mm.FootnotesProvenance
Private UK collection.
This large group, in a less typical, postcard-size format, mostly comprises the familiar Kalighat depictions of Hindu deities and mythological figures, with a variety of scenes from the life of Krishna, though there are some less common subjects, such as the descent of the Ganges on to Siva. There are also a few 'genre' subjects, including depictions of Calcutta babus and bibis (for the type, see S. Sinha, C. Panda, Kalighat Paintings, Ahmedabad 2011, pp. 94 -95), and two dancing girls.
For a group of 101 similar paintings, see the sale in these rooms, Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 11th June 2020, lot 166; and for a group of 270, see Christie's South Kensington, Arts of India, 10th June 2013, lot 161.
