SLAVERY - ALABAMA] Large group of approximately fifty documents related to the administration of slavery within the state . Wilcox County, Dallas County and various other locations in Alabama: circa 1840s-60s. Approximately fifty manuscript items (several multiple pages), sizes vary from small slips to large folding table-top documents. Includes numerous receipts and accounting documents pertaining to the hire and sale of slaves, inventories and probate documents, folio estate administration ledger sheets listing the names of many slaves, the detailed inventory of a large Alabama plantation, and other types of documents. Of note is an 1847 estate inventory which contains 8 large sheets affixed at ends to form an approximate 60 x 14 inches table top document listing the property of Jonathan Younger (includes one line item for "maintaining a blind negro"); an invoice from the Camden Republic newspaper to advertise "Petition for sale of Negroes" and another advertising an "Administrators sale of Negroes 2 squares 5 times;" an inventory listing the expense of "15 pair negro shoes"; a rare intact group of four guardianship documents which divides the expense of hiring slaves between four children; a scarce 1861 invoice for "Loss of time Negro woman confined"; an 1860 attorney's invoice for "Going to Parks to make arrangements for dividing negroes"; and numerous other documents of equal interest. Very well preserved overall but with some stains, tears, etc., each housed in protective sheeting, should be seen, sold as is. A large and fascinating group of documents pertaining to the administration of slavery in Alabama. Worthy of future research, within these papers are rare documents on the hiring, or temporary employment, of slaves as well as many inventories and probate documents relating to Alabama plantations and large estates, many listing the names, age and associated values of slaves in the Antebellum period and the first years of the Civil War.
