A strong contender for the 'most handsome car of the 1960s' title, Maserati's Ghibli debuted at the Turin Motor Show in November 1966. Styled at Ghia by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Ghibli rivalled the Ferrari Daytona for straight-line performance while beating it for price and, arguably, looks. The Ghibli used a tubular steel chassis while the power unit was Maserati's race-proven, four-cam, 90-degree V8 engine, which was used in 4.7-litre form up to 1970/71 when it was superseded by the 4.9-litre version. The gain in horsepower was minimal but in either case performance was stunning, with 100mph (160km/h) attainable in under 16 seconds. By the time production ceased in 1973 a total of 1,149 coupés and 125 spiders had been made. Retaining its original engine, this manual transmission Ghibli Coupé was sold new in the USA and purchased there by the current owner in April 2005 at Bonhams & Butterfields' Brookline, Massachusetts Sale (Lot 612). At that time the car was finished in its original Champagne colour, the interior having been re-trimmed in white leather, and was described as carefully maintained but never restored. The Ghibli had been in the then owner's hands for eight or nine years, and was reckoned by him to be the best of the four he had owned, being used regularly and benefiting from considerable expenditure on the mechanicals. Described by the vendor as in generally good condition, this beautiful Italian masterpiece is offered with current UK V5C registration papers and MOT certificate.
