The Maserati Ghibli is one of the most stunning cars ever made, being the first major work of Giorgio Giugiaro who was then with Ghia. Standing only 46 inches (115 cm) high, it looked equally good as a fastback or spyder and its 4.7 litre 'quad cam' V8 delivered a top speed of more than 170 mph (272 kph) and enormous torque, making the Ghibli one of the most flexible GT cars of its era. A Ghibli is both essential to any Maserati collection and an ideal introduction to ownership of exotic machinery. Some 1,149 Ghiblis were made, perhaps a third with the later 4.9-litre ‘SS’ specification engine, and of these a large proportion received the optional automatic gearbox.
