The MG was discovered, in a dreadful state, in a barn at Westoning, Bedfordshire, during 1984 by the current owner. It was recovered, virtually in two halves and thus began a four-year restoration by the owner, with the assistance of the staff of the Colchester Institute. The MG was then used in rallies whereby it won its class in the 1991 Top Gear Heritage Historic Rally Car Championship. With only 799 UK home market of the MGA being manufactured during 1956, this is indeed a rare surviving example. Today SLN 994 presents very well. The coachwork looks resplendent in red with excellent chrome and sits upon a set of painted wire wheels with new tyres. Mechanically, this MGA is in very good condition with recent works that included a brake overhaul with new master cylinder, brake slave cylinders and brake shoes. It further benefits from copper brake pipes, a stainless steel exhaust and a single 12-volt battery conversion. The interior does not disappoint and exudes an air of pleasant patination. The black leather seats are in very good order as are the carpets and door cards. A full set of weather equipment are included, a tonneau cover, side screens and a hood that was replaced in 2018. During the 1956 Mille Miglia, four MGA cars were entered. Car number 226 did not turn up, however, three further MGAs did race, all finishing with the highest place being car number 229 of Scott-Russell/Haig, a testament their strength and reliability. SLN 994 is eligible for the Miglia Mille Retrospective (subject to rules and specifications). The history file includes its FIA Historic Vehicle Identity Form, an RAC Motor Sports Association Rally Special Stage Vehicle Log Book, a UK V5C registration document, a large collection of invoices and a MoT test certificate valid until August 2020. This lovely MGA is ready to enjoy straight away, either on rallies or local jaunts, who’s going to be lucky enough to enjoy it?
