Beschreibung:

WINTER VON ADLERS FLÜGEL, Georg Simon. Bellerophon, sive Eques peritus . Nuremberg: Wolfgang Moritz Endter and the heirs of J.A. Endter, 1678. 2° in 4s (330 x 213mm). Parallel text in Latin and German. Half-title (creased), titles in Latin and German, engraved frontispiece, 170 engraved plates of dressage schooling by C. N. Schurtz and P. P. Troschel, including 66 (64 double-page) of bits, woodcut illustrations. (Some light dampstaining, mainly marginal, first sixteen leaves with wormtrack in lower blank margin, not affecting text, thereafter diminishing to a minute wormhole, occasional very slight spotting, small repair to p.191 affecting two or three letters, plate of bit no.34 possibly supplied from another copy.) [Bound with:] Georg Simon WINTER VON ADLERS FLÜGEL. Hippiater Expertus, seu medicina equorum absolutissima. Nuremberg: Wolfgang Moritz Endter and the heirs of J. A. Endter, 1678. 2° (330 x 213mm). Parallel text in Latin and German. Titles in Latin and German, engraved title, engraved double-page plate of veterinary instruments, engraved illustrations throughout. (Light dampstaining.) 2 works in one volume, contemporary vellum (soiled, lacking ties). Provenance : Fuerstlich Auerspergsche Fideicommisbibliothek, Laybach (bookplate). An important work on 18th-century equitation, paired with a treatise on equine medicine, largely compiled from the writings of various classical authors. The Bellerophon differs from similar dressage and schooling texts of the period in advocating a gentler approach with softer bits than those described in the works of Grisone, Pluvinel and other riding-masters. The Latin translation is by Michael Schuster: the original German text was apparently first published in Ulm in 1674 (according to Catalogue Huzard, III 3878), but most bibliographies give only the present (1678) edition. Menessier de la Lance II, 649-651; Lipperheide Tc 33-34; Brunet V, 1465.
