COLERIDGE, Samuel Taylor -- Two autograph letters signed by Charles LLOYD, ('C Lloyd' and 'Charles Lloyd Jun . .') to Joseph Cotton, London, 2 May 1798 and Ambleside, 14 March 1801 , the first describing the behaviour of Coleridge towards Lamb and himself, 'nothing but proofs of disgust & alienation since that foolish affair ... his letters lately contain nothing beside direct and indirect insults', discussing the possibility of going to Nether Stowey to effect a reconciliation with Coleridge, 'I hate a disconnection from a man whom I have so much lov'd', and asking Cottle whether Coleridge will retain the poems by Lamb and himself should a third edition of Coleridge's poems be published; the second discussing the distribution of his novel Edmund Oliver , and recent literature, 'till lately the health of my nervous system has been such, that I have refrained wholly from all reading of new poetry, or works of imagination, 5½ pages, 4to , both with integral address leaf; also an autograph letter signed by T[heophilus] Lindsey to Revd. John Rowe, with references to Coleridge, 1798. Two sonnets by Lloyd (1748-1828) were published in Coleridge's Poems , 1797. The precise details of 'that foolish affair' between Coleridge and Lloyd are not known, but it ended what had been a close relationship. Coleridge was deeply hurt by his portrayal, thinly disguised, in Lloyd's Edmund Oliver , published by Cottle in April 1798 and dedicated to Lamb.
