BURNEY, Frances (1752-1840). Autograph letter signed ('F.B.') to Mrs. Hester Lynch Thrale, Chessington, 16 November [1780?] , opening 'Most heartily do I congratulate my kind-hearted Tyo upon the safety of her Abate - do but love us all as long as you love us well, & who can rival or compare with us for our good luck nel' amicizia ? ... I am very glad you are to have such a House full of people & hope they will make the foul fiend budge, - Dr.Johnson, I hope, will buffet it, Mrs.Strickland fish it some where else, Mrs. Davenant laugh it out of Countenance, & Piozzi charm it away by his singing', continuing with gossip and ending 'I am glad my Journal diverted you - I knew, indeed, your taste for a pretty little bit of sedition: and I guessed it was hereditary', 2 pages, 4to (225 x 182mm) , conjugate address leaf; DELANY, Mary (1700-1788). Series of 4 affectionate autograph letters signed ('MD' or 'Mary Delany') to Frances Burney. Bulstrode, Windsor and London, 11 July 1784 to 22 January 1787 , commencing 'My dear Fanny, your affecting account of the Destresses of your excellent Friends, I sensibly felt, not only on your account but theirs', outlining a scheme for Fanny to stay with her, 'I have not the least thought of leaving this Place before Xmas and perhaps not till the new year ... so my dear Fanny if this scheme will suit you we may leave this place together, but as I am no tyrant you shall be at liberty to leave me - when most agreeable and convenient to yourself'. In other letters she also asks Fanny to stay and seems concerned about her health, adding 'I had the Honour and the Joy of an Hours visit yesterday morning from our Dear and Excellent Queen - you could not be more delighted with her smiles - then she was with your perfect Propriety', introducing Fanny Burney to the royal family and obtaining for her a place in the royal household, 7 pages, 4to , each letter endorsed 'Dictated and signed by Mrs. Delany'; BRYANT, Jacob (1715-1804). Autograph letter signed to Frances Burney, Chippenham, 7 August 1792 , informing her that he will be buying a house in London, expecting to marry 'but it is such a change as must be expected by a person at my very advanced term of life', that he is trying to obtain another dog to replace 'Hector' who had died and has been offered one called 'Flirt', an altogether too unheroic name and asks Fanny's opinion as to a more suitable name, 'A very large body of respectable persons, including Idiots, Naturals, Simpletons, Changelings have been passed over with too little notice. You will perhaps think me prejudiced in favour of a society, to which I may possibly be in some degree allied; and bring this rhapsody in full proof of your opinion', 3 pages, 4to , address panel and seal on verso of last leaf. Included with the lot is a note in English said to be from Madame de Staël to Fanny Burney [autograph?], 1½ pp, 8vo , and an autograph letter from Gasparo Pacchierotti to Mrs. Payne, Charles Burney's daughter-in-law (she married Fanny's brother James), Padua, 24 August 1821, 1½ pages, 4to , conjugate address leaf. He was Charles and Fanny Burney's favourite singer and used to perform at their house. (8)
