The leading French classical scholar of the day replies encouragingly to the nineteen-year old Voltaire about his dramatisation of Sophocles' Oedipus : 'Je suis ravi, Monsieur, de voir qua vostre age vous avez le courage dentreprendre de mettre sur nostre theatre l'Oedipe de Sophocles, qui est la plus parfaite qui nous reste de l'antiquité. Voltaire -- as evidence of his precocity -- has written (at a later date) on the address leaf 'Lettre de Mr Dacier de 1714, qui prouve que l'auteur d'Odipe (sic) avait fait cette piece avant l'age de 20 ans' and docketed it on the first page, 'M. Dacier de L'academie francaise'. His Oedipe was first performed at the Comédie Française in November 1718 and was an immediate success. Dacier, the translator of Horace and Sophocles and Keeper of the Library of Louvre, comments on the differences between Voltaire's and Racine's treatment, particularly with regard to the chorus and interpretation. The letter is addressed to Monsieur Arouet -- as Voltaire was known until June 1718 when, on release from the Bastille where he had been imprisoned for a publication lambasting the Regent, he changed it to Arouet de Voltaire and later simply 'Voltaire'.
