Very large leaf from an Antiphoner, with a large decorated initial, from an illuminated manuscript on parchment [Italy (probably Tuscany), late thirteenth century] Single vast leaf, with a large initial ‘F’ (opening “Franciscus vir catholicus ...”, the antiphon for Vespers on the Feast of St. Francis; and more than half the page in height), in pink heightened with white penwork and acanthus leaf folds, one large red flower-head at centre of initial, enclosing thin geometric interlace of foliage, and the whole set on a blue ground with large bezants at corners, coloured acanthus foliage from corners of initial forming a decorative bar the height of the initial ending in tight twists of leaves, large red initial with blue penwork on reverse, rubrics in red, capitals touched in yellow, five lines of text in a large liturgical bookhand with music on a 4-line red stave (rastrum: 47 mm.), catchword at base of page, seventeenth- or eighteenth-century folio “160” in upper outer corner, scuffs to some gold of bezants and small ink smudge to base of leaf, else in outstanding and fresh condition, 558 by 368 mm.
