Very large leaf from an Antiphoner, with a large decorated initial, from an illuminated manuscript on parchment [Italy (probably Tuscany), late thirteenth century] Single vast leaf, with a large initial ‘A’ (opening “Advenit ignis domini ...”, a responsory for Pentecost), in dull pink with white penwork, enclosing sprays of thin foliage on burgundy and blue grounds with gold bezants at corners, curls of coloured acanthus foliage at ends of initials wrapped around a decorative bar of the same descending half the page in length, with another spray of foliage in upper border, blue paragraph marks, red rubrics, capitals touched in yellow, five lines of text in a large liturgical bookhand with music on a 4-line red stave (rastrum: 47 mm.), seventeenth- or eighteenth-century folio “114” in upper outer corner, scuffs to some gold of bezants and small ink smudges to upper edge, else in outstanding and fresh condition, 558 by 368 mm.
