Title: Chart of the N. W. Coast of America and the N. E. Coast of Asia, Explored in the Years 1778 and 1779. Prepared by Lieut’t Henry Roberts under the immediate Inspection of Capt. Cook Author: Roberts, Henry Place: London Publisher: William Faden Date: July 24, 1784 Description: Copper-engraved chart, hand-colored. 39.4x67.4 cm (15½x26½"). Rare first edition of William Faden's publication of Henry Robert's suppressed chart showing the discoveries and cartography of the third and final voyage of James Cook's explorations of the Pacific. When first published in 1784, the chart showed details of the Alaskan and Northwest coasts and the northern Canadian interior not present on the corresponding chart in the pushed voyage account. It has fourteen Alaskan place names not on the authorized map, including Bald Head, Cape Denbigh and Cape Darby in Norton Sound. It also shows, for the first time on any printed map, the results of Hearn’s expedition in the Canadian Arctic. Cook’s death in Hawaii in 1779 left the production of the expedition’s findings in two rival camps: on the one hand were Henry Roberts and Captain King (the authors of the charts and journals, respectively), and on the other hand was Alexander Dalrymple and his political supporters. Dalrymple won out, and as a result Roberts’ chart of the North Pacific was replaced with the less detailed map engraved by T. Harmar. The present, very detailed chart, was engraved by W. Palmer. Wagner N.W. Coast 700. Lot Amendments Condition: Some darkening to map and oxidizing to the original coloring; some stains in margins, verso repairs around edges and along centerfold, split at lower centerfold to the neat line; about very good, a rare and significant map. Item number: 286009
