OLIVA, Joan] (fl. 1570-1614). Portolan chart of the Indian Ocean and Far East. [Marseilles: c. 1600]. Illuminated manuscript portolan chart, on vellum, heightened in gold, 520 x 710mm. The chart extending from the Horn of Africa and Arabia to Japan, and the Islands of the Western Pacific drawn in sepia, red, blue, green and maroon, rivers in blue, numerous coastal placenames in black and red, four Portuguese shields and flags decorating India, Java and Japan, 11 compass roses of varying sizes encircling the centre point of the chart, equator in red, latitudinal graticule graduated and heightened in gold, scale bars at lower and upper margins, the title 'Asia' set in a banner, the whole chart filled with rhumb-lines, gold border. A magnificent portolan chart encompassing the Spanish and Portuguese territories of the late 16th century. The depiction of the region closely resembles the maps of Linschoten's Itinerario first published in Amsterdam in 1596. The depiction of Japan is very similar to the Portuguese maps by Lazaro Luis (1565), Dourado (1568-80) and Luis Texira (c.1585).
