The Collection of Medals to the Medical Services formed by Colonel D.G.B. Riddick Meeanee 1843 (Surgeon Alexr. Campbell, 22nd Regt.), naming engraved in the correct style, original steel clip and straight bar suspension, good very fine, rare £2000-2500 Footnote Alexander Campbell was appointed Hospital Assistant on 27 February 1827 and Staff Assistant Surgeon on 29 July 1830. Service as Assistant Surgeon with the 19th Foot on 12 June 1835 was followed by further service on the Staff, 22 November 1836 and then with the 22nd Foot, 15 December 1840. Appointed Surgeon with the 22nd Foot on 30 September 1842, he was present with them at the action at Meeanee. Departing the 22nd in 1847, further appointments with the 55th and 59th Foot and Staff followed. Being placed on Half Pay in April 1850; he died in Hong Kong on 18 June 1853. Campbell is several times mentioned in Ever Glorious, The Story of the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment by Bernard Rigby. A story recalled after the battle of Meeanee ‘.... It is appropriate here to single out a man who was never so distinguished in his time. Assistant (sic) Surgeon Alexander Campbell went on every possible expedition from the day he joined. .... In those days anaesthetics and Listerism were unknown agents in field surgery, whilst the scalpel and saw were used in all their hideous nakedness. After a lapse of time, the regimental surgeon came staggering out from the hitherto closed entrance to the hospital tent. He looked deadly pale and was in a state bordering on collapse, for he and his assistants had been at work during the greater part of the night. ... Some time afterwards, Campbell, thoroughly exhausted from the amount of work he had done at Meeanee, Emaunghur and other theatres, was sent home on sick leave. He returned for a short period to India but his health was not restored and he retired’. The medal roll confirms the recipient as the only Surgeon and one of only 4 officers and 61 other ranks of the 22nd Regiment to receive the medal with the ‘Meeanee’ reverse.
