A family collection of medals, comprising: the Dardenelles Naval casualty group to Stoker 1st Class D. Burrows Royal Navy: 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medals (K. 20453. D. BURROWS, STO., 1, R.N.); Memorial Plaque in card case (DANIEL BURROWS), good very fine or better; and four to Chief Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class W. T. Burrows, Royal Navy: 1914-15 Star (272359 W.T. BURROWS. E.R.A. 2. R.N.), British War and Victory Medals (....C.E.R.A.2...); Royal Navy Long Service and good Conduct Medal, George V (....C.E.R.A.2......H.M.S. VERNON), mounted for wearing, about very fine. Daniel Burrows was killed in action on the 14th March 1915, while serving in the Light Cruiser H.M.S. Amythyst. This day saw the continuation of efforts by the Royal Navy, in concert with merchant seamen, to clear Turkish mines from the Dardanelles under intense bombardment from shore batteries. Burrows would already have been in action for several days by this point, and so excoriating had been the enemy fire that Admiral Carden had been obliged to place Naval volunteers on the civilian mine sweepers in order to stiffen their resolve. Amethyst was concentrating her fire on the Turkish searchlights, when a 6 inch shell penetrated her armour and exploded in the area of the stocker's mess deck.
