Sir John Barrow (1764-1848) An Account of Travels into the interior of Southern Africa, in the years 1797 and 1798. London: A. Strahan for T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1801-1804. 2 volumes, 4 (25.9 x 20.6cm.) Half-title to volume I. Folding aquatint view with a sepia wash, 9 folding maps or charts, two hand-coloured in outline. (Some browning and spotting, occasional offsetting of text onto plates.) Contemporary tree calf, the flat spines gilt with green morocco lettering-pieces (extremities rubbed, joints somewhat split). FIRST EDITION. Barrow 'was attached to the staff of the Earl of Macartney, one of the governors of the Cape Colony during the first occupation of the British...Mr.Barrow accompanied an expedition from Cape Town to Graaff-Reinet, and another to Namaqualand...Algoa Bay was visited...together with the "circumjacent" country, mention being made of the discovery of lead at Van Staaden's River...The second volume contains detailed accounts of the various divisions of the Cape Colony, together with much information concerning the inhabitants, and the importance of the country from a military and commercial point of view': Mendelssohn I, p.88; Abbey Travel 320.
