Provenance : Sir John Barrow (lengthy manuscript notes in both volumes, one dated 4 September 1839, incorporating a presentation inscription to his son:); John Barrow (manuscript notes dated 1858, armorial bookplate). BARROW FAMILY COPY OF THE EXPANDED AND CORRECTED SECOND EDITION: the first edition to include the fine aquatints after Samuel Daniell (1755-1811). The inscriptions are as follows, vol.I: in the author's hand: 'To Mr. John Barrow from his affectionate father John Barrow This volume was printed from a M.S. account of the Colony of the Cape collected on a Journey into the Interior and lent by Lord Macartney to Lord Melville who expressed a strong wish it should be published, which was done in my absence, and a Copy of it sent to me at the Cape John Barrow 4th September 1839.'; in the author's son's hand: 'I wish this Copy of my Father's Travels in Africa to be retained in the family. He wrote the above at my request. John Barrow April 1858.'. Vol.II is inscribed by the author 'This Second Volume of Southern Africa was written after my return to England at the Suggestion of Henry Dundas Vct. Melville who had long entertained a high value of the Cape of Good Hope as a Colony of the British Empire John Barrow', with a side note 'I wrote the whole M.S. of this volume with one metal pen', the author's son repeats his wish that the copy should stay in the family.
