S.E. ERSKINE -- HMS GARNET Manuscript log-book of HMS Garnet , Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, Falkland Islands, 22 August 1880 - 23 June 1882, neatly written on ruled paper, recto and verso, 194 pages, 325 x 210 mm. , title page in watercolour ('Log of HMS Garnet Kept by S.E.Erskine 1880'), including 33 watercolours and 5 sketches in pencil or pen and ink of subjects including the coastline, harbours and ports (Rio de Janeiro, Port Stanley, Straits of Magellan, Cape Frio, Panama River, etc.), and the Garnet and other vessels; and 15 diagrams of parts of the ship and 6 charts in pen and ink and watercolour, sizes 45 x 70 mm. - 325 x 210 mm., bound in, contemporary roan-backed cloth (spine neatly repaired). The illustrated log-book of a corvette sailing with the flying squad cruising between Montevideo and the Falkland Islands. HMS Garnet , built in 1877, was one of five corvettes which, with the frigate Inconstant , comprised the squad. It first entered Port Stanley on 24 January 1881 ('Formed single column ahead Garnet and Bacchante changing stations. Passed through narrows into Stanley harbour'), also visiting Darwin Harbour and Lively Island before returning to Montevideo. From May to September 1881, the squad moved between Montevideo and Buenos Aires, before revisiting the Falklands in January 1882. On 23 June 1882 HMS Garnet was 'homeward bound'.
