THOMAS EDWARD LAWRENCE (1888-1935)
THOMAS EDWARD LAWRENCE (1888-1935) Autograph letter signed ('T.E.S.') to Robin [Buxton], Plymouth, 27 November 1932, one page, 4to ; with a letter to Buxton from Sir Edmund Allenby, n.d., about a cheque. Provenance : Sotheby's sale, 22 July 1985, lot 298; the Spiro Family Collection. THE PRINCIPLES OF INVESTMENT: 'Your queer bank swears that I have £300 odd to my credit . I don't believe it ...'. Still, Lawrence proposes to invest £200: 'The best investment principle, they tell me, is to stick the Times Financial Page, eyes closed, with a pin ... it doesn't worry me what you do with it: or whether it goes down or up, later ... nobody stands to lose less than me: so vogue la galère'. Robert ("Robin") Buxton (1883-1953) was commander of the Imperial Camel Corps; he and Lawrence met during the attack on Mudawara in August 1918. After the war, Buxton served as Lawrence's bank manager, and helped finance the subscribers' edition of Seven Pillars . (2)
