THOMAS EDWARD LAWRENCE (1888-1935)
THOMAS EDWARD LAWRENCE (1888-1935) Autograph letter signed ('T.E.S.') to Pat [Knowles], Ozone Hotel, Bridlington, 13 February 1935, 2 pages, 4to (some light soiling on verso along folds). Provenance : Christie's New York, 9 June 1993, lot 54; the Spiro Family Collection. PREPARING FOR LIFE AFTER THE RA: 'Glad when it's all over. By the way, the Air Ministry warn me today that the Press are getting curious about my discharge. I'll try to dodge them by slipping away one morning from here on my fresh bike, and coming to Clouds Hill by easy stages'. Lawrence comments on a number of the works Knowles is carrying out at Clouds Hill, including gravelling and painting, leaving the decisions to his own judgement. The letter concludes on an emphatic note, 'It will be very pleasant to get there and shut the door and sigh "at last". These long-drawn endings to existences do not suit me '. Pat Knowles was the eldest son of Lawrence's neighbour; he and Lawrence had discussed works on Clouds Hill over Christmas 1934.
