Beschreibung:

SALOMON AUGUST ANDRÉE. -- G.& H.HASSELBLAD (photographers) Three albumen prints, two: 10.6 x 15cm; one: 9.3 x 15cm, on individual uniform original printed mounts (each 16.8cm x 21.8cm), titled Andreés Polarexpedition 1897 with and photographer's credit G.& H.Hasselblad Göteborg . Matching contemporary simulated rose-wood frames. An interesting series showing Andreé's support team making preparations in Spitzsbergen. After an abortive attempt in June 1896, the Swede Andrée finally took off with two others in the balloon Örnen on July 11 1897. Their last message was dated July 13 (recovered from a homing pigeon released from the balloon), and then they disappeared. The fate of the expedition wasn't discovered until 30 years later, when on 6 August 1930, their remains were discovered on White Island. From the recovered journals it appears they abandoned the Örnen on 16 July 1897, 500 miles from the Pole, then made their way to White Island, arriving 18 September 1897. The journal entries stop on 17 October 1897. (3)
