Death : Hand-colored aquatint frontispiece, title-page and 72 plates after Thomas Rowlandson (engraved title and a few plates closely trimmed, "Drunk and alive" plate cut round and inlaid, "How Vain we are" plate trimmed to image border and with closed tear in margin, "Behold the signal" plate with 3 small tears within image, "Let him go on" plate with upper margin renewed, few marginal repairs.) Life : Hand-colored aquatint frontispiece, title and 24 plates after Rowlandson. (Lacks the publisher's advertisement leaf at end, few marginal repairs.) Early 20th-century red morocco gilt, covers and spine decorated with rose tools, top edges gilt, by W. Root. Provenance : purchased from John Howell, San Francisco, 17 June 1972. FIRST EDITIONS IN BOOK FORM. Abbey Life 263, 264; Ray English 27, 28; Tooley 411 and 410 ("indispensable to any Rowlandson collection"). A FINE SET. (3)
