ROWLANDSON, Thomas, illustrator (1756-1827). -- [COMBE, William, 1741-1823]. The English Dance of Death . London: J. Diggens for R. Ackermann, 1815-1816.
ROWLANDSON, Thomas, illustrator (1756-1827). -- [COMBE, William, 1741-1823]. The English Dance of Death . London: J. Diggens for R. Ackermann, 1815-1816. 2 volumes, 8 o (235 x 145 mm). Half-title in volume one. Additional hand-colored aquatint title-page in volume one and 73 plates after Thomas Rowlandson (some occasional minor browning, plate facing p.217 in volume one with repaired tear crossing image). (A few leaves with minor marginal repairs.) 20th-century blue morocco gilt, spines gilt-lettered, top edges gilt, by Zaehnsdorf (some minor rubbing at joints and spine ends). Provenance : Charles E. Dunlap (bookplates). FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM containing the very rare 1814 title-page in volume one reading: "English Dance of Death in twenty-four monthly numbers." The later 1815 title reading: "The English Dance of Death from the designs of Thomas Rowlandson" is bound immediately before the 1814 title-page. Neither Abbey nor Tooley note a title-page dated 1814; this rarely found early issue title was presumably abandoned for the 1815 title-page which would have been included along with the other preliminary pages for binding when the final part of volume one was published in March 1815. Abbey Life 263; Tooley 410. [ With: ] ROWLANDSON. Characteristic Sketches of the Lower Orders, intended as a companion to the New Picture of London . London: Printed by L. Harrison for Samuel Leigh, n.d.[ca 1825). 12 o (138 x 85 mm). 54 hand-colored plates. 19th-century black morocco, gilt-lettered on front cover and spine (rebacked preserving original spine, front hinges cracked); morocco pull-off case. Provenance : René Choppin (bookplate). [ Bound with: ] [BUSBY, Thomas Lord]. Costume of the Lower Orders of the Metropolis . [London, ca 1830]. 23 hand-colored plates. (3)
