Roosevelt, Washington, D.C., 8 December 1942. 1 page, 4to, White House stationery. THE PRESIDENT SENDS A U.S. SAVINGS BOND TO A GRANDSON AS "A NEST-EGG...TO KEEP THE WOLF FROM THE DOOR!" A letter, dated a year after the U.S. Declaration of War, carrying a highly unusual handwritten postscript that reveals Roosevelt's life-long interest in the collecting of autographs, a hobby he had long pursued along with stamp-collecting. Here, Roosevelt explains that he is "doing a little 'distribution of principal' this Christmas" and is therefore enclosing a Bond for John's son Haven, as "a nest-egg which I hope he will not have to cash at an early date in order to keep the wolf from the door!" Franklin asks that John place the bond into a safe deposit box or "other place of safety", and explains that the interest checks will be sent to Anne for Haven. After his full signature, the President adds a postscript reading "this signature is worth more than just Pa."
