"THAT PRECIOUS DOCUMENT BY THE FOUNDING FATHERS": TWO WEEKS BEFORE PEARL HARBOR FDR CELEBRATES THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BILL OF RIGHTS Against the backdrop of World War II and the Nazi threat to freedom, Roosevelt celebrates "one of America's greatest contributions to the happiness of mankind" in this letter to Swope: "I have read the copy of Our Bill of Rights: What it Means to Me , which you were good enough to send me. The Bill of Rights Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee is to be congratulated on the publication." Swope, a journalist on The New York World, was chairman of the Bill of Rights Sesquicentennial Celebration. The 150th anniversary of "the adoption of that precious document by the founding fathers," FDR continues, "clearly sets forth the need for a rededication, at this time, to those freedoms which, if cherished and kept unweakened, will continue to be one of America's greatest contributions to the happiness of mankind." The numerous patriotic celebrations that occurred in the war years--the 150th anniversary of the Constitution in 1939, Jefferson's bicentennial in 1743--underscored for Roosevelt and all Americans the importance of America's founding principles of liberty and freedom in a world where very few enjoyed those blessings in war torn Europe and Asia.
