REVOLUTIONARY WAR, WAR OF 1812, NAVAL OFFICERS]. BAINBRIDGE, WILLIAM. Letter signed ("WmBainbridge") to Alijah Goodridge, Navy Yard, Charlestown, 6 April 1833, one page, 4to, integral address leaf, pages 2 and 3 with copies of recipient's response, small tape patches along central fold , Bainbridge reports that "A Quay Wall & Stone Fence is about being erected upon the West Line of the Navy Yard adjoining the Town Docks... and permission is requested from the authorities to admit lighters and Scows with stone into said Docks. . . . " --DECATUR, STEPHEN. Document signed, Philadelphia, 9 December 1805, one page, oblong, 122 x 182 mm. (4¾ x 7 1/8 in.) , relates to the celebrated exploit in which Decatur set afire and destroyed the Philadelphia , which had been captured by the Tripolitans, certifying that the bearer, "William Robinson served as a Landsman on booard the United States Frigate Philadelphia, under my command for the sphere of twelve months" --DE GRASSE, FRANCOIS J.P. Count DE. Document signed ("LeComte de Grasse"), Versailles, February 1781, one page, 8vo, edges trimmed , declaring, just before his departure for American waters, that he fully authorizes all monies to be received by his nephew, the Count de Bar---STODDERT, BENJAMIN, First Secretary of the Navy . Letter signed ("Ben. Stoddert") as Sec. of the Navy, to John Templeman, George Town, 9 November 1798, 6 pages, 4to , giving extremely detailed instructions for the survey of timber lands to supply the U.S. Navy with ship's-lumber; the lands to be located "on Potomack well cloathed in Timber proper for building ships of the largest size. . . .This is a confidential business. . . ." and pointing out various likely parcels for examination --PREBLE, EDWARD, Commander of Constitution. Autograph letter signed in full to Henry Dearborn, New York, 29 March 1805, one page, 4to, integral address leaf with panel in Preble's hand, postmarks and "FREE" stamp, small stains along one edge , a fine letter, reporting that he has "examined the two 13-Inch mortars," found them "in excellent order" and "in the possession of Genl.
