Gates's order for reinforcements during the first phase of the battle at Saratoga. "The Bearer Major Robert Cochran is Intrusted with my particular and positive orders to forward to this Camp, all the Militia of the neighbouring Counties in the eastern States--and all officers and soldiers on their March from thence are to observe and obey the directions given them by Major Robert Cochran." -- ARNOLD, Benedict. A contemporary copy of an ALS (not in Arnold's hand) to General Gates, Fort Schuyler, 24 August 1777. 2 pp, folio . Excellent account of actions during the Saratoga Campaign. Notes that he arrived there after a twenty mile forced march to harass enemy as they retreated and took prisoners and a great number of provisions. Notes he has sent out a party of Oneidas and he will send out 500 men in morning, then he will hasten to join Gates. He notes the brave actions of Colonel Ganswoort and his men. Notes the Oneidas and Tuscaroras have been exceedingly friendly. He says that he believes that Fort Schuyler is out of danger for this year. -- BALCARRES, Alexander. British General.
