General Hull, commander of the army that surrendered Detroit to the British, was accused of cowardice and treason. Shortly before his court-martial, he writes to North asking that he send a letter to the president of the court, Wade Hampton, specifying his actions during the Revolutionary War and expressing "my general character with regard to bravery and courage." Hull was convicted and sentenced to be shot, but received a stay of execution as a result of his record in the Continental Army. -- BIDDLE, James (1783-1848), Naval Officer . Autograph letter signed ("J Biddle") [to David Porter], Philadelphia, 11 December 1815. 2 pp., 4to . PRAISING THE "HORNET". Biddle notes that Congress had honored victorious captains of the war with a medal and money for every enemy ship they captured or destroyed. He expresses his belief that the Captain of the Horneti should also be honored despite the fact that "the action of the Hornet and Penguin occurred since the peace." Keith writes of weather conditions, the Hudson Bay Company and expresses concern over the war: "we are not without some anxiety, originating from the American Declaration of War against Great Britain.
