PSEUDONYMS AND ANONYMS -- Joseph-Marie QUÉRARD (1797-1857). Les Supercheries littéraires dévoilées. Paris: 1869-1870. 3 volumes, second edition, by Gustave Brunet & Pierre Jannet. [ bound with ] J.-M. QUÉRARD. De la bibliographie générale au XIXe siècle et plus particulièrement du manuel du libraire et de l'amateur des livres. Lettre M. Jacques-Charles-Brunet . Paris: 1863. 1 volume (bound at the end of Vol. I of the first work). [ together with :] Antoine-Alexandre BARBIER (1765-1825). Dictionnaire des ouvrages anonyms . Paris: 1872-1879. 4 volumes, third edition, by Olivier Barbier & Reni and Paul Billard. [ with :] Gustave BRUNET (1807-1896). Dictionnaire ... Supercheries... Supplément la dernière édition de ces deux ouvrages . Paris: 1889. 1 volume. 4 works in 8 volumes, large 8 o (248 x 160mm). Uniform brown half morocco by Stroobant, lettered in gilt on spine, original wrappers to second work bound in, top edge gilt. A very fine complete set of the celebrated 'Édition Daffis', combining the second edition of Quérard's Supercheries with the third edition of Barbier's Dictionnaire , with G. Brunet's Supplément , published ten years later, which has remained one of the standard works of French bibliography. The first and second editions of Barbier, published 1806-1809, and 1822-1827 respectively, covered both anonyma and pseudonyma; the third edition was edited by Barbier's younger son Olivier-Alexandre-(1806-1882), aided by his elder brother Louis-Nicholas (1799-1888), librarian of the Louvre library who had already edited part of their father's second edition, in collaboration with Reni-Marie Billard (1829-1877), and Billard's brother Paul, all three librarians at the Bibliothèque Nationale. Quérard first published Les Auteurs déguisés as a supplement to the second edition of Barbier, but in the same year (officially in 1847) began publishing his Supercheries , in partial collaboration with, and the generous financial support of, the Russian bibliophile Serge Poltoratzky (b. 1803), completed in five volumes in 1860. The second (Daffis) edition was edited by Pierre-Gustave Brunet, not a member of the bookselling family, who had acquired the archives of Barbier and Quérard, and Pierre Jannet (1820-1870), 'libraire ... bibliophile et ... littérateur' ( DBF ). Quérard, 'martyr to bibliography' (O. Hamst, i.e. Ralph Thomas, 1867), had a difficult life and a difficult character, as exemplified by his very rare open letter to J.-C. Brunet who had lavished praise on his La France littéraire , but criticized Les Supercheries in vol. IV (1863) of his Manuel . G. Brunet's Supplément also comprises his 'Essai sur les bibliothèques imaginaires', 'Supercheries typographique' and 'Appel aux bibliophiles' (unattributed anonyma), as well as Georges Mouravit's 'Les Devises des vieux poètes'. [ with :] Gustave BRUNET. Imprimeurs imaginaries et libraries supposeés. Paris: 1866.8 o (218 x 138mm). Half-title. (Lower outer corner of half title torn away, some spotting to first and last few leaves.) Later boards. (9)
