BODLEY, Sir Thomas (1545-1613) -- Manuscript copy on paper of various documents relating to the establishment of the Bodleian Library and the various endowments which ensured its continued survival. [No place: no date, but 17th century]. 56ff. 8 o (187 x 120 mm), one 19th-century steel-engraved portrait of Bodley tipped-in at front. 19th-century reverse calf (spine worn, joints split). Provenance : Henry J.B. Clements (armorial bookplate). An important collection of near-contemporary copies of six documents of importance to the existence of the Bodleian Library in Oxford. The documents are as follows: The Life of Sr. Thomas Bodley by Himself ... written wth my owne hand Ano 1609 December ye 15th. (ff. 1-12v); The Last Will & Testament of Sr. Thomas Bodley Kt. ... Subscribed & Sealed these presents wth my own Sickly hand ye 2d of Januarie 1612 . (ff. 13-32v); A Codicill to be annexed to ye last Will & Testament of me Thomas Bodley Kt ... the two & twentieth day of Januarie 1612 . (ff. 33-36v); A Recitall or Note of all Such Evidences now remaining in ye hands of Sr Thomas Bodley Knight as do concern ye Mannour Lands & Tenements by him given to ye maintenance & preservation of the Library within the University of Oxon, and wch after his decease are to come and remaine to ye use of ye Same University (ff. 36v-39v); The Yearly Revenue of ye Librarie, wth the Names of ye Tenants to ye University (ff. 40-41r); This Indenture made the 26th day of Aprill, in the Year of the Reign of our Soveraigne Lord James ... the Seventh ... Between Sr Thomas Bodley of London Knight; The Chancellour, Masters & Scholars of the University of Oxon on the Second Party ... 1609 (ff. 42-56r). Bodley's autobiography was published in 1647; its text agrees in all respects with that of the MS, but the spelling is noticeably 'modernized'. With the bookplate of Henry J.B. Clements, the authority on English armorial book stamps.
