Starting in 1886 he began to exhibit both in Nantes and at the Paris Salon to critical acclaim. In 1892 he moved to Paris, settling in with a number of other artists at the Bateau-Lavoir, and subsequently joined Durand-Ruel Gallery, with whom he exhibited for the rest of his life. He made numerous trips in search of subjects for his paintings, often visiting Brittany, where he worked at Pont-Aven and on the island of Belle Isle en Mer, where this view was painted.
Dirty varnish. Frame rubbing. Center stretcher marks visible. Canvas slightly buckled on stretcher in bottom corners. No apparent restoration.
