Maxime Maufra French, 1861-1918 Rentree des Bateaux de Peche a Belle Isle en Mer Signed Maufra and dated 1910 (lr); inscribed as titled and with artist's name, dated and numbered 9273 on the reverse; inscribed as titled on the stretcher Oil on canvas 25 3/4 x 32 inches (65.5 x 81.3 cm) Provenance: Galerie Durand-Ruel, Paris Purchased from the above by Mrs. Walter Bacon By descent through family of Mrs. Bacon to the present owner Maxime Maufra was born in Nantes, where he studied painting with several local artists. Starting in 1886 he began to exhibit both in Nantes and at the Paris Salon to critical acclaim. In 1892 he moved to Paris, settling in with a number of other artists at the Bateau-Lavoir, and subsequently joined Durand-Ruel Gallery, with whom he exhibited for the rest of his life. He made numerous trips in search of subjects for his paintings, often visiting Brittany, where he worked at Pont-Aven and on the island of Belle Isle en Mer, where this view was painted.
Dirty varnish. Frame rubbing. Center stretcher marks visible. Canvas slightly buckled on stretcher in bottom corners. No apparent restoration.
