Couterot Date: 1694 Description: [xlvi], 594, [10] pp. Translated into French by Jean Maillard. (4to) 25x18 cm (10x7½"), period speckled calf, gilt-tooled decorative spine and board edges, raised spine bands, spine label lettered in gilt; speckled edges; blue and white silk double endbands. A beautiful copy of the works of John of the Cross, a major figure of the Counter-Reformation, a Spanish mystic, a Roman Catholic saint, a Carmelite friar and a priest, who was born at Fontiveros, Old Castile. Both his poetry and his studies on the growth of the soul are considered the summit of mystical Spanish literature. Early decorative bookplate on front pastedown. Lot Amendments Condition: Some rubbing to joints and extremities; interior sound with a bit of light foxing, a lovely copy; very good. Item number: 296598
