Der französische Universalkünstler Jean Cocteau war Schriftsteller, Filmregisseur, Maler und Zeichner. Mit 17 Jahren veröffentlichte er erste Gedichte, die ihn bekannt machten. Wertvolle Anregungen gaben ihm seine literarischen Freundschaften, die er mit Edmond Rostand, Marcel Proust, Catulle Mendès und André Gide schloss. Nebenher versuchte er sich in der Darstellung des Balletts und lernte Igor Strawinski kennen. Seinen ersten Roman „Potomac“ verfasste er 1913. 1917 schrieb Cocteau das Libretto für das kubistische Ballett „Parade“. Das Bühnenbild und die Kostüme schuf Pablo Picasso, die Musik Erik Satie, die Choreografie war von Léonide Massine. Die Tänzer gehörten zur Truppe der Ballets Russes. Cocteau reüssierte als Theater- und Romanautor. Unter dem Eindruck der Malerei Pablo Picassos und der Surrealisten übernahm er verschiedene Stilarten der letzten Jahrzehnte. Cocteau war stets im Austausch mit Künstlern und Filmemachern, wie Charlie Chaplin. Anfang der 1930er Jahre drehte Cocteau seinen ersten Spielfilm, „Le sang d’un poète“. Für den Film „Der Zauberlehrling“ (1933) mit dem ins französische Exil geflüchteten deutsche Tänzer Jean Weidt arbeitete Cocteau mit dem exilierten Regisseur Max Reichmann zusammen. Cocteau war mit Jean Marais befreundet und gilt als dessen Entdecker. Cocteau war zudem eng mit dem deutschen Bildhauer Arno Breker befreundet. Cocteau und Marais saßen Breker Modell für Porträtbüsten. Für Aufsehen sorgten Cocteaus monumentale Decken- und Wandgemälde, so im Trauungssaal des Rathauses von Menton (1958) und in Notre Dame de France in London (1956). 1954 wurde er Mitglied der Akademie der Künste in Frankreich und Belgien. 1955 wurde er als Nachfolger von Jérôme Tharaud in die Académie Française aufgenommen 1957 wurde er als auswärtiges Ehrenmitglied in die American Academy of Arts and Letters gewählt. 1960 wurde Cocteau zum französischen Dichterfürsten gewählt. Für seine Freundin Edith Piaf schrieb er 1940 den Einakter „Le Bel Indifférent“. Louis Amade schrieb Cocteau zu Ehren den Lied zu einem Chanson, „Quand il est mort, le poète“, das Gilbert Bécaud auf Schallplatte veröffentlichte.

The French universal artist Jean Cocteau was a writer, film director, painter and illustrator. At the age of 17 he published his first poems, which made him famous. The literary friendships he made with Edmond Rostand, Marcel Proust, Catulle Mendès and André Gide gave him valuable inspiration. At the same time he tried his hand at performing ballet and met Igor Stravinsky. He wrote his first novel, “Potomac,” in 1913. In 1917, Cocteau wrote the libretto for the cubist ballet “Parade.” The stage design and costumes were created by Pablo Picasso, the music by Erik Satie, and the choreography by Léonide Massine. The dancers belonged to the Ballets Russes troupe. Cocteau was successful as a playwright and novelist. Under the influence of Pablo Picasso's painting and the Surrealists, he adopted various styles from the last decades. Cocteau was always in contact with artists and filmmakers such as Charlie Chaplin. In the early 1930s, Cocteau made his first feature film, “Le sang d’un poète.” For the film “The Sorcerer's Apprentice” (1933) with the German dancer Jean Weidt, who had fled into exile in France, Cocteau worked with the exiled director Max Reichmann. In 1954 he became a member of the Academy of Arts in France and Belgium. In 1955 he was accepted into the Académie Française as the successor to Jérôme Tharaud. In 1957 he was elected as an honorary foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1960, Cocteau was elected French poet laureate. In 1940 he wrote the one-act play “Le Bel Indifférent” for his friend Edith Piaf. Louis Amade wrote a chanson in honor of Cocteau, “Quand il est mort, le poète”, which Gilbert Bécaud published on record.
