Provenance Acquired directly from the artist Exhibited New York, Chambers Fine Art, Hong Hao’s Reading Room, March 3–April 10, 2004 Catalogue Essay The artist's "Spring Festival Over the River" series interposes images of modern-day Beijing with the masterpiece of the same name by Zhang Zeduan, the Song dynasty (960-1279) court painter. Zhang's work, which is painted on a silk handscroll, depicts daily life in the ancient Chinese capital of Kaifeng during the Qingming Festival. It is one of only a few paintings from the former imperial collection that the Kuomintang did not move to Taiwan and that remain today in the People's Republic of China. Hong's photographs depict a different type of daily life in modern Beijing. They are taken from inside a car, capturing a typical journey along Beijing's main thoroughfares past towering construction sites. Read More
