Provenance Acquired directly from the artist Literature H. Hong, Hong Hao Beijing, 2004, p. 105 (illustrated); H. Wu, Shu: Reinventing Books in Contemporary Chinese Art, New York, 2006, p. 44 (illustrated) Catalogue Essay In this [Selected Scriptures] series of works, I have tried to create an old, oft-read book. Every individual work within the series presents only two leaves of this open book. The first work appeared as a single book page and was created in 1988. I was stil la student at the academy at this time. In this particular work I portrayed the image of the “White Haired Girl” a charcter from a well known revolutionary model opera. I depicted her in a way reminiscent of ancient classical silk books. The juxtaposition and potential shock effect brought about by content unrelated to form fascinated me.
