GHAZALI, Mohammed (1058-1111). [ Hegyonot la-Filosof ha-Eloki he-Chakham ha-Kolel Abuchamad Al Ghazal ] (collection of unpublished treatises on logic). MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER Copied by Moses ben Isaac of Urbino, Urbino (Italy), 1579-80 4 o (190 x 120 mm). [1] + 71 leaves, with modern lead pencil foliation. The copyist began the copy on 28 Tevet 5340 (1579) and completed the first treatise on 27 Shevat, the second on 26 Adar of the same year (1580). Brown ink. Italian semi-cursive script. Marginal annotations, (slightly cropped, with loss of text), mostly in a contemporary Italian semi-cursive hand. Attractive illustrated architectural title-page (mounted on a smaller leaf) and various schematic drawings and opening word panels, all executed in the text ink. (Approximately one fourth of the manuscript affected by ink corrosion but the text still easily readable, first two leaves partly detached, otherwise good condition.) Modern blind and gold-tooled light brown morocco, blue paste-patterned edges, two modern paper flyleaves at back and front. CONTENTS: Fol. [1]r: original title-page, pasted onto a blank leaf. Fol. [1]v: blank. I. Fols. 1r-32v: Mohammed Ghazali's Intentions of the Philosophers , translated from the Arabic by Judah ben Solomon Nathan. With notes and terms in Italian in the margins. Cf. M. Steinschneider, Die hebrischen bersetzungen des Mittelalters und die Juden als Dolmetscher (Berlin 1893) p. 306-307. Fols. 33r-34v: blank. II. Fols. 35r-38r: Terms of logic in the form of stylized trees. Fols. 38v-40v: blank, with later inscription. III. Fols. 41r-64v: Logic , by Petrus Hispanus (Pope John XXI). Translated from the Latin by Abraham ben Meshullam Avigdor. Cf. ibidem , p. 470-471. Fol. 65r: Terms of logic in the form of a stylized tree. Fol. 65v-66v: blank. Fols. 67r-69r: Terms of logic in the form of stylized trees. Fol. 69v: blank. IV. Fols. 70r-71r: another anonymous treatise on logic. Fol. 71v: blank. PROVENANCE: 1. Censor: Camillo Jaghel, 1619 (fol. 71r). 2. Signature of Isac Moise Volterra Sinigaglia (fol. 71v), as indicated by Neubauer and still visible on the microfilm, apparently no longer present, probably due to washing. REFERENCES: Neubauer, no. 38, p. 14; Institute of Microfilmed Hebrew Manuscripts, Jerusalem, F 4706; [exhibited] Catalogue of Anglo-Jewish Historical Exhibition, 1887.
