The daughter of the famous symbolist painter Jan Toorop she grew up surrounded by her father's artist friends and maintained friendly ties with the major artists of her time throughout her life. In 1921, the artist built the De Vlerken house in Bergen in collaboration with the architect Piet Kramer. The house-studio was a place where Toorop and his artist friends met and exchanged ideas: Piet Mondrian Gerrit Rietveld, the sculptor John Rädecker and the poet Adriaan Roland Holst. In 1932, Gerrit Rietveld was invited by Toorop to renovate his interior. For the dining room, he designed a bench, an open china cabinet, our round table and the 'Beugelstoel' chairs. For the lighting, he installed suspended light tubes in the spirit of the luminaire designed in 1922 for Dr Hartog. The grey tones of our table are used in several pieces of furniture designed by Rietveld at De Vlerken. Gerrit Rietveld also supplied a number of chairs for the studio and garden furniture. At De Vlerken, Gerrit Rietveld's minimalist furniture stands alongside Toorop's impressive figurative paintings and the abstract works of Piet Mondrian and the major artists of Dutch modern art.------------------------------------------- Charley Toorop (1891-1955) est l’une des grandes figures de l’art néerlandaise du XXe siècle. Fille du célèbre peintre symboliste Jan Toorop elle a grandi entourée des amis artistes de son père et entretiendra tout au long de sa vie des liens amicaux avec les artistes majeurs de son temps. En 1921, l’artiste fait construire en collaboration avec l’architecte Piet Kramer la maison De Vlerken à Bergen. La maison-atelier est le lieu de rencontres et d’échanges pour Toorop et ses amis artistes : Piet Mondrian Gerrit Rietveld ainsi que le sculpteur John Rädecker ou encore le poète Adriaan Roland Holst. En 1932, Gerrit Rietveld est invité par Toorop à rénover son intérieur. Pour la salle à manger, il conçoit une banquette, un vaisselier ouvert, notre table ronde accompagnée des chaises « Beugelstoel ».
