Provenance : (1) John Mason artium magister, (possibly Sir John Mason diplomat 1503-1566, who graduated M.A. in 1524/25), signature on title, lower flyleaf and note on lower pastedown, purchased for 3 shillings 5 pence, dated 'MDXXV'[ sic. ], his extensive marginal annotations throughout in red and black ink; a note, possibly in Mason's hand on lower pastedown "Recevyd of master standyshe vi s viii d ". (2) Rafe Thackham , inscribed on title "I will not stick to say nor boldly for to tell, the water that by stealth is got all other doth excell", dated 1577. (3) William Hall of the Middle Temple, 18th-century signature on title. A FINE SAMMELBAND WITH AN INTERESTING PROVENANCE. Sir John Mason was a statesman and diplomatist who almost miraculously remained in favour with Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary and Elizabeth. His interest in medicine was perhaps limited to a concern for his own health, but the DNB notes that Dr. John Caius the younger did dedicate to him an edition of his De Medendi Methodo .
