The American Vine, A Sermon, Preached in Christ-Church, Philadelphia, Before the Honourable Continental Congress, July 20th, 1775. Being the day recommended by them for a general fast throughout the United English Colonies of America.
Philadelphia: James Humphreys 1775. 34 pp., 8vo (215 x 133 mm). Original stitched marbled paper wrappers, uncut. Condition : very minor foxing; minor stains to the rear wrapper. Provenance : A. Sims (signature on the title). stirring revolutionary sermon , preached before the Continental Congress in the weeks following their Declaration for taking up arms. Duche (1737-98) Anglican rector of Christ Church, led the opening prayers at the First Continental Congress and was later appointed as official chaplain to that body. Although an early supporter of independence, a significant position considering his Anglican oath of loyalty to the King, during the occupation of Philadelphia Duche renounced his support for the colonists and fled to England.
