The Detail and Conduct of the American War, Under Generals Gage, Howe, Burgoyne, and Vice Admiral Lord Howe: with a very Full and Correct State of the Whole Evidence as given before a Committee of the House of Commons, and the Celebrated Fugitive Pieces which are said to have given Rise to that Important Enquiry.
London: Richardson and Urquhart, 1780. 190 pp., 8vo (225 x 140 mm). Original blue wrappers, manuscript title on front wrapper and spine, uncut. Housed in a cloth clamshell case. Condition : minor foxing to the title; minor tears and foxing to the wrappers, portions of spine perished. The enlarged and reorganized third edition of a work first issued in 1779, this pamphlet contains essays by Galloway, Johnstone, Mauduit and others, as well as copies of letters to and from Howe, Burgoyne and more. It is a valuable contemporary record of Revolutionary events, described at the time by the Monthly Review as “written with a spirit, that may serve alternatively to freeze and fire the blood of the indignant reader.” A fine, unsophisticated copy in the original wrappers. Adams, American Controversy 79-111c; Howes V93; Sabin 19774.
