The Wright-Donaldson copy of an attractive illuminated Bible, in near-contemporary pigskin binding. The printer, Herbort, had previously worked with Johannes de Colonia and Nicolaus Jenson, but began to print on his own after Jenson’s death. Chancery folio (282 x 202mm). 397 leaves (of 398, lacking a prefatory text leaf). 15-line illuminated initial F, other initials in red and blue with penwork flourishes, smaller red and blue initials (a little toning, dampstain, some shoulder notes just shaved, final leaf laid down). 16th-century German blindstamped pigskin with central panel of Justitia, clasps, old shelfmark on fore-edge (rebacked, endleaves renewed, losses to leather on rear board). Custom box (worn). Provenance: Benedict Muller (inscription on first leaf) - old note in English adhered to flyleaf - Rev. John Wright 1836-1919, American priest and bibliographer (bookplate laid in, his sale, Merwin-Clayton Sales Company, 16 October 1911, lot 1) - Benjamin R. Donaldson 1893-1980, American Bible collector and founder of the Book Club of Detroit (sold Christie's New York, 25 September 1981, lot 65).
