Beschreibung:

BIBLE. Leaf from a Vulgate Bible, in Latin [north-eastern France, 14th century], 280 x 196mm, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM (patched at top with three lines from Deuteronomy from the same manuscript).
BIBLE. Leaf from a Vulgate Bible, in Latin [north-eastern France, 14th century], 280 x 196mm, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM (patched at top with three lines from Deuteronomy from the same manuscript). The opening chapters of Joshua are preceded by the final section of the prologue attributed to St Jerome. Joshua opens with an HISTORIATED INITIAL E showing Joshua kneeling before the Lord against a diaper background with burnished gold. The two columns are written in black ink in a gothic bookhand with the text capitals touched red; four large initials and three chapter numberings are in blue flourished with red or red flourished with purple. The leaf comes from what would have been a large and handsome lectern Bible; a bifolium from the Rosenthal Collection, included in Quaritch catalogue no. 1088 (1988) appears to to have come from the same manuscript.
