a period copy shot of a Navy paddle frigate at anchor in an unknown location. No back mark. The purpose-built vessel, likely the USS Powhatan, is heavily armed with a large caliber pivot gun in the bow along with her imposing broadside battery of 24lb'ers. The Powhatan was commissioned in 1852, gaining notoriety as Commodore Perry's flagship during the visit that opened Japan to US trade in February 1854. Powhatan saw extensive service during the Civil War in the Gulf Squadron, off Charleston, in the West Indies, and especially during the reduction of Ft. Fisher in 1864. The warship spent another two decades showing the flag before being sold and finally scrapped in August 1887. AUCTIONEER'S NOTE: It has been called to our attention that this is an image of the U.S.S. Mississippi, a sidewheel steamer named for the Mississippi River. She was built by the Philadelphia Navy Yard under the supervision of Commodore Matthew Perry, and was commissioned on December 22, 1841 with Captain W.D. Salter in command. The Mississippi saw action during the Mexican-American War between 1845 and 1847, served as Commodore Perry's flagship during his journey to Japan from 1853-1855, and returned to the Far East between 1857 and 1859. After returning to Boston in 1860, she was reactivated right before the Civil War. While blockading Key West in 1861, she made her first capture, the schooner Forest King. Soon after, she also captured the British bark Empress with the help of Vincennes. In Spring 1862, Mississippi joined Farragut's squadron for the planned assault on New Orleans. During a key battle with Forts Jackson and St. Philip, she ran Confederate ram Manassas ashore. In 1863, she was ordered up river for operations against Port Hudson but was grounded while attempting to pass the forts guarding Port Hudson. Every effort was made to refloat Mississippi, but under enemy fire, her machinery was destroyed, her battery spiked, and she was fired to prevent Confederate capture. She blew up and sank when the fire reached the magazines, killing 64 [Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, Vol. IV, 387-388]. Condition: Evident imperfections in original print, else VG, with strong clarity.
