Beschreibung:

including photographs, his sword knot, canvas bag for his sword, and his vellum commission signed by Governor E.O. Morgan. Wakeley enlisted as a Captain in 1861 and was mustered into Co. I of the 98th. During its service, the 98th saw major action at Fair Oaks (71 casualties) and Swift Creek, Procter's Creek, Drewry's Bluff and Bermuda Hundred. Like many of the New York unit, the 98th was engaged at Cold Harbor, where the loss was 114 killed, wounded or missing. This archive provides a fine temporal view of Wakeley's service, and includes a quarter plate tintype housed in an MINT geometric union case of Wakeley standing before a patriotic backdrop (apparently taken at the time of his enlistment- his short jacket bears no insignia); a full length cdv of him with his sword and officer's sash prominently displayed; a vignetted cdv of him in uniform by Cooper and Cottrell, Williamstown, NY; a mounted 6 x 8" enlargement of the same image with his bars and uniform buttons tinted; an immediate post war cdv of him in civilian clothing; a 13 x 7" albumen image of a GAR reunion of the 98th; his leather sword knot and canvas sword bag (the sword was stolen from the family during a burglary years ago); his aforementioned commission, and a card mounted copy of a letter written by U.S. Grant regarding troop deloyment before Vicksburg. A great group. Condition:All near EXC, save for sword knot which exhibits an old break and tape repair.
