Illustrated, 16 plates and tipped-in facsimiles. Maroon cloth, stamped in gilt, upper covers gilt blocked with Marlborough arms (spines slightly faded, corners rubbed, paint-spotting to vol.II boards, scattered foxing). Provenance : Hugh Cecil Baron Quickswood (1869-1956) (inscription on front free endpaper of vol.I); Christie's London, 2 December 2003, lot 84. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED on the day prior to publication to the best man at his wedding: "Linky from Winston S. C. 1 Jan. 1906." Cecil, known as "Linky" to his friends, served in parliament from 1895-1906, and was the leader of a group of young Tory MP's (Churchill among them) who styled themselves the "Hughligans."
