Beschreibung:

CHURCHILL, Winston S. (1874-1965). A History of the English Speaking Peoples . London: Cassell and Company, [1956-58]. 4 volumes, 8vo. Full page maps. (Endpapers lightly spotted.) Original crimson cloth; original pictorial dust jackets (a few insignificant nicks). FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, THE FIRST VOLUME INSCRIBED ON THE DAY OF PUBLICATION BY CHURCHILL TO ELEANOR ROOSEVELT on a separate sheet laid-in to volume one: "With all good wishes, Winston S. Churchill April 23, 1956." Surrounding Churchill's inscription is a written exchange (in pencil) between Mrs. Roosevelt and her secretary, Maureen Corr. At the head of the page, Ms. Corr writes: "How do I address him?" and Mrs. Roosevelt responds: "Dear Sir Winston." She has also written to her secretary: "paste this page in book," a request which was never fulfilled. Ms. Corr writes at the bottom of the page: "Mr. Churchill's book 'A History of the English-Speaking Peoples' Vol. I. The Birth of Britain." FURTHER INSCRIBED BY CHURCHILL on a separate sheet pasted to the front free endpaper in volume four: "with all good wishes Winston S. Churchill." AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY, and presumably one of the first copies inscribed by Churchill. The first two volumes ( The Birth of Britain and The New World ) were published in April and November 1956 respectively; the third ( Age of Revolution ) in October 1957, and the final volume ( The Great Democracies ) in March 1958. The exact date of publication of the first volume was April 23rd, the same day Churchill dated his inscription to Eleanor Roosevelt. Woods A138a. (4)
