Attributed to Charles Delin (Dutch, 1756-1818). Oil on canvas. A half-length portrait of Dr. Peter Turner (American, 1781-1812), depicted in a black jacket with a brown collar and a white tie, set against a green background, unsigned, verso with three obscured inscriptions, housed in its original gilt wood frame; 23.25 x 17.25 in. (sight). Family tradition tell us that Dr. Peter Turner served in the War of 1812 as Surgeon's Mate, eventually earning the rank of Assistant Surgeon. He was wounded and died on November 5, 1812, probably not long after the present portrait was commissioned. Not to be confused with his uncle of the same name and occupation, the present Dr. Turner was the son of Captain Daniel Turner (American, 1750-1837) and the older brother of Commodore Daniel Turner (American, 1794-1850) of Lake Erie fame. Provenance: Descended in the Turner Family of Newport, RI Condition: Conservation treatment/cleaning. Craquelure. Some small spots of paint loss. One small hole near l.c. Frame missing one ring hanger on top.
