Carl Clemens Moritz Rungius American, 1869-1959 Mountain Pass with Stream Signed C Rungius (lr) Oil on canvas 7 1/2 x 11 inches Provenance: The artist Harry Fulda, the artist's brother-in-law; thence by descent to the present owner Beginning with his first trip to the Rocky Mountains and Yellowstone in 1895, and over a period of more than sixty years, Carl Rungius devoted himself to the study and depiction of North America's wide-open spaces and the creatures that inhabited them. He generally favored dramatic mountain settings for compositions such as Mountain Pass with Stream. Rungius typically worked in the field, eventually painting more than 1,100 fluid studies on squares of canvas pinned with thumbtacks to a rigid work surface. The resulting tack marks are as much an indication of authenticity as the signature that also appears on the current work. Serving as reference material for larger works, the small paintings were shuttled back and forth by the artist between his New York and Banff studios. Rungius had no children of his own. This work passed down through his family to his niece, Ruth Fulda Wacker. Estate of Ruth Fulda Wacker
