BYRON, George Gordon Noel, Lord (1788-1824). Autograph letter signed ("Byr n ") to John Murray his publisher, n.d. [docketed July 1814]. 1 page, 8vo, integral blank, neatly tipped into The Corsair (see below). The poet sends revisions for a new edition of his very popular The Corsair ; first published in February, the first six printings sold a total of 23,575 copies. He writes: "I send you some additional lines with which I am at present in good humor& hope you will be so, or shall both have time enough to change our opinions. They are somewhat fanciful, in the "Beauty & Butterfly' style but if they sound as well, you wont complain, nor shall I" In a postscript he adds "Monday night - at odds with Tuesday Morning" [ Tipped in: ] BYRON. The Corsair, A Tale. Fifth Edition. London: John Murray 1814. 8 o . 2 leaves publisher's advertisements at back. Nineteenth-century green morocco gilt, gilt Greek key borders, covers with Byron's crest and motto ("Crede Biron"), t.e.g., others uncut (slight rubbing to extremities). JOHN MURRAY'S COPY, a presentation copy from his son and grandson. Provenance : John Murray I, circular bookplate - John Murray II, son of the preceding, inscribed on flyleaf: "To N. Buchanan in remembrance of John Murray from John Murray and A.H. Hallam Murray, June 1892" - The grandfather of the present owner, purchased from Thomas F. Madigan, 1928.
